Black Friday week is arguably the best time of the year to buy a TV or make a big purchase for the holidays. With the technology advancement of the Next-Gen consoles, we now look to upgrade our TV’s to provide the best quality gaming experience. Many of us have not upgraded our TV’s in over 5 years when LED TVs and 3d TVs were the high end budget busters. When buying a TV for gaming here are 4 things you need to consider before making the purchase.
Response Time/Input Lag
Response time is the time it takes the actions from your game controller to reach the TV and execute the action. HDMI will give the fastest response times compared to S-Video. If you are currently not using HDMI or your TV does not offer HDMI then this is a great opportunity to drastically improve your experience. Every one of us has experienced a lower K/D ratio from lag, and although we blame it on our internet connection that is not always the case. LED LCD TVs will provide the best response times for gaming as apposed to Plasma TVs.
Today pretty much every manufacturer includes a Game Mode option for your TV. These are pre-set settings that have been determined optimal for gaming and reduce Input Lag as well. Samsung and Sony TV’s historically have tested very well in response times.
Tv’s typically are available from 60HZ to 240HZ, with the higher the HZ(Refresh Rate) the better. So what is refresh rate? When there is motion on the screen if the TV is not able to provide enough frames per second the motion will be blurred. When we didn’t have access to higher refresh rates this was much more evident than it is now. 60HZ will still give you a great picture quality but 120HZ -240HZ will no doubt be better for gaming.
HD 720P – 1080P
Interlacing & Progressive. You have probably seen on your TV different displays such as 1080i or 1080p or 720P. Progressive is the newer technology and simply lets you see the whole image at once rather than using odd and even lines. 720 vs 1080 is telling you how many lines are displaying at once. A picture that has 1080 lines will give a better picture quality than 720 does. PS4 has 1080P picture quality out of the box while Xbox One comes in at 720p. But thats not to say that all games you play on the PS4 will be played at 1080P either. If you are a gamer that really loves picture quality 1080p is definitely what you want.
Since most of us just spent $500 on a PS4 or $600 on an Xbox One and a few hundred extra on games and accessories. I wanted to show a some TV’s that are GOOD quality but really discounted right now.
